Our town still has a facility where people without a shower or a bath in their house can go to wash themselves. There are 16 establishments in Paris where a 20-minute shower is free. The first one to open in the UK was in Liverpool in 1828, but none are still functioning today.

  1. There’s a ‘gentleman’ living in our village who lives in what was his parent’s house without any running water. He can be seen, occasionally, with a bucket gathering water from the river to flush his toilet. For understandable reasons, I’ve not given any thought to his bathing regime though he’s always very pleasant and polite when you meet him…
